Robots evolve altruism, ability to lie in 50 generations

In another 50 generations I imagine they’ll evolve ambition, stealth and death lasers, and then we’ll be sorry.

Man, I was feeling like this last year was a complete wash until I started looking over the few lj entries I actually made.

2007 in review:

- went to Canada twice, for a total of five weeks
- went to Atlanta for the first time
- applied for Canadian permanent residency
- saved $6000 for the Canada fund
- gained 10 pounds, lost 15 pounds. Net victory!
- got a kitten! Okay, it’s not really my kitten. Still.
- increased responsibility at work
- first published article

How about 2008?

- visit Bonnie-san in London and Bryony in Belgium
- go to San Antonio, Boston, Columbus, Minneapolis and Memphis for work
- first published book (only edited, but still)
- lose another 15 pounds
- maybe move to Canada? Depends on the speed of the immigration office.
- learn enough French to travel more easily

“I never need to find time to read. When people say to me, ‘Oh, yeah, I love reading. I would love to read, but I just don’t have time,’ I’m thinking, ‘How can you not have time?’ I read when I’m drying my hair. I read in the bath. I read when I’m sitting in the bathroom. Pretty much anywhere I can do the job one-handed, I read.” — J.K. Rowling (in O Magazine)

Harry Potter Book 7: Totally bursting with love! Neville! Aberforth + Goat! Molly Weasley! Snape’s redemption! Hermione MIND-WIPING HER PARENTS DUDE THAT IS HARDCORE. I had issues with it, mostly the ones the rest of the internets had, but I’m pretty sure Neville LEADING THE UNDERGROUND RESISTANCE MOVEMENT made up for all of them.

Harry Potter Movie 5: Best movie so far!

Canada: Will be there in less than two weeks!

Hair: Totally want this cut!

Avocados: Tasty!

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End: Very good soundtrack!

Back: Kind of sore due to bad posture!

Kittens: Adorable!

Today at lunch:

Phil: Did I hear something about a boyfriend?
Me: No, we were just talking about zombie movies.
Phil: But I distinctly heard you say the words “My boyfriend”
Me: I was talking about “My Boyfriend’s Back” as an example of a zombie teen romantic comedy. No gossip, sorry. I don’t have a boyfriend.
Phil: You’re not getting any younger.

WHAT.

Charles: I saw a guy on BART this morning with an eye patch and that got me thinking. Eyepatches are cool, right? So if you had to wear an eyepatch, how would you want to lose the eye?
Me: Easy. Trade it to a billionaire with eye cancer for beaucoup bucks.
Charles: Wow. That’s lame.
Charles: I think a knife fight in a hidden city.
Me: You won’t think it’s so lame when I use my eye money to buy a hover car.

How would you want to lose the eye?
